My Father's Memorial for February 2021

I didn't get to post a memorial blog post last year, so I'm doing this now. It is February and will soon be the 14th anniversary of my father's death. A tweep reminded us to recall someone we love but that we lost and it reminded me to return to posting about my dad.

So, here goes: Known as "Sarge" to his friends because he was a sergeant in the Jamaican Army. We lost him to cancer in 2007. He supported our mother when she decided to attend college, my artwork/writings even when he didn't understand it, and was a strong supporter of women's rights. He believed women and girls should get all the education they can and to control their own finances. He also believed women/femmes should be in more positions of power and authority. He didn't hold much faith in his gender.

He treated and loved animals as people. He taught me a lot of my social justice ideas because most of what I know about human rights, social activism, and global politics are from him.

February is especially hard for me as it's the month of his birthday, his anniversary to our mom, and the month of his passing.
Here's to you, Sgt. Kenneth L. Welsh.❤💔
