Pronouns vs. 'Preferred' Pronouns

[My response to an Instagrammer who uses (They/She) pronouns]

I used 'they' in my essays in English class and used to get slammed by grade school teachers. I also use 'they' in conversations when I didn't want the other person to know the gender of who I was referring to out of respect and privacy for divulging what they gave me permission to do. 

People use 'they' all the time, but now that we get permission to refer to individuals as such, now we balk? And yes, 'they' has been used as a singular for centuries. Folks aren't studying their English history.😑

I'll speak about this because I have too many thoughts about how people have such narrow standards for respect.
