Decolonizing my own work...

When I drew a cat character back in high school, this was around the time I began to formulate characters for my Tabber the Red series. One of the more important female characters, a male student called her 'thunder thighs'. A male character 'looked gay'*.When working on characters for my scifi dog comic, one athletic-looking female character 'looked like a lesbian', as if one's body type determined one's orientation!

I have gotten a lot of flack, criticism, and insults towards my OCs (original characters) since I could put pencil/pen to paper. And when people attack my characters, I feel as if they're attacking me. One particular hurtful comment was when a close friend and fellow artist told me to kill off my main female character because she wasn't 'good enough for the main male character', who happened to be a gangster!

Now you probably noticed a pattern here. Most of the harshest critiques are towards my female or femme looking characters. We already know why this is and I can discuss it another time, but, the point of this post is to understand how important it is to me as an artist to show diversity even within my speculative fictional worlds. That's why even my anthro cat characters will have locs and braids. That's why I make sure that this October artist month, when I show my Tabber the Red fantasy-sword&sorcery characters who happened to be tattooed, scarred, or wearing mendhi and/or henna, I put a footnote that all those body markings have nothing to do with war or becoming a warrior and everything to do with cultural/ethnic/tribal/national identity.

Since I pull inspiration from real-life beliefs and practices, the same respect I will accord to others, I will do so for my fictional people. To me, culture and ethnic identity is important and not to be appropriated as gimmick or 'trendy'. I'm doing my research. I'm speaking to others. I will learn, so that when my characters express themselves, the identity will be as seamless as the 'air they breathe'.

There will be more 'decolonizing' for my OCs and in my writings. Just you wait and see.

*That character that was called gay? It seems that even if that person meant it as an insult, I realized while writing the character that he is indeed QUILTBAG and I'm writing in his sexual identity and orientation into the story. So, I guess that long ago person did me a favor by 'outing' my cat character!

Tabber the Red is 14 now and my Life still Matters

My official website, Tabber the Red, turns 14 years old this July 2020.

To have my own website bothered me throughout the late 90s. By the 2000s, I played around with various software available to me.

Eventually, the aesthetic you see now came about from 2006, and by July 2007, when that aspect of the website officially went online, a few major milestones had happened: I was without a father for the first time. And I was coming more into my own on online.

Also, I am a Black person and identify as a cisgender straight woman. Black Lives Matter. Black Trans Lives Matter. Black Life Matters. MY Black Life Matters.

I Won July Camp NaNo 2019

I WON CAMP NANOWRIMO.

I needed to complete another story project, so for this July Camp NaNo, I decided to work on two stories simultaneously: a continuation of the April Camp NaNo story project and the start and hopefully completion of the second story.

I set my sights on 9,000 words, just as I did for April, and made it to 9,099 words!
Now to work on revising and editing both projects. During July Camp, I also added more to my online world-building encyclopedic blog.

I also did a video series of coloring a sketch on some of the characters and uploading to Instagram. Though I kept tight notes on the videos, they still ended up out of sequence. I'm really exhausted that I did this to myself. But... I won and that means I beat my record from last time. While being distracted with other projects such as the world-builder blog and art-process videos.

And no, I'm not posting to YouTube. It's already been suggested. I have my reasons. I don't need to be on so many social media platforms. I work in several genres and need to get my projects and acts together, and, right now, I use events such as NaNoWriMo and Inktober to get those ideas off the ground. I mean what I say. Social media is work in and of itself, and right now, I'm at a tolerable level.

Thank you. And as always, when I have something new posted or upcoming assignment, I will let you know the details, my Dear Readers.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY WEBSITE

Below is the old look created by Dreamweaver.

Decade-old website made by Dreamweaver CS3

Here is the new look created by a Microsoft Store app called Rocketcake. It is still accessible with alternative text in place of all images and it runs faster and smoother.

With Camp NaNo, I'm halfway there!

Dear Self:

When deciding to work on two simultaneous projects at once, making sure all your ducks are in a row still doesn't guarantee satisfaction.

I have one story continuing from last Camp NaNoWriMo April 2019, Oak & Ash with Bone, which is considered high/epic fantasy.

And this Camp NaNoWriMo July 2019, I'm working on another story that is working-titled The Firefly Crown Cycle (the "official first" story in the series published by e-anthology Anthrozine) that takes place 12-20 years later.

It is tentatively-titled The Queen in Spite of Herself/The Lion Rampant. Also titling the chapters.

The photo to my left shows the current journals I'm gleaning from in order to get this work on board.

If you want to read Firefly Crown online, you can go to my publication blog The Angry Goblin at Wordpress!

I am halfway through and already feel I might not make my word count, but, I would rather have the outlines and drafts typed out so I can edit and revise for later.
I'm exhausted and will do more blogging. Take care!

I WON CAMP NANO FOR APRIL!

I won Camp NaNo for April 2019!

A writer pal invited us from our Twitter chat to participate in the 'cabin' he would create. That pal and another pal won - we reached our pre-set word count - and were given discounts on writer-friendly software and online services. This 2019 has been a bit rough and it's good to win something!

This 2019 has been a bit rough and it's good to win something! Also, the contest helped get me to complete a fantasy story that's been on my mind for a LONG time. Not only did I get the outline straightened, but add in enough meat via the contest that I can use May and June to edit and revise it.

Also, God willing, when July Camp NaNo rolls around, not only will my Tabber the Red have a new look, but my SF short story will be out, and I'll have another Furry Fantasy project to complete!

In the meantime, for any writers interested in what Camp NaNo is, to learn more as well as how to donate, head over to its website at Camp NaNoWriMo!

Lots of good stuff coming up, but I will be giving sneak peeks and dropping details as we get closer to the July month on this blog!

Just A Quick Note...

Oh snap, my website upgrade is nearly done! Created a whole new About Me page along with a photo I edited. I'm going to test out the website upload. And I also resubmitted a recently rejected essay (but the feedback was glowing and sweet) to a literary journal I absolutely adore. Wish me luck!

More Random Thoughts from Journal Land

Camp NaNoWriMo started but this week took a bit much out of me, plus, I plunked down some hefty funds to get my eyes tested for new prescription frames! I was given a 40% discount but I'm poor until my next paycheck.

More news! Tabber the Red site will have a new look this July! In time for its birthday! So, working on some new Tabber stories set in world while also giving the official website a new face! Ay...

More random notes from the journals - this time, I need to do things on smaller paper or I feel I can't finish it! (Psychologically the same as getting the same amount of food put in a smaller bowl or on a smaller plate)

11x14 paper will be used as drafting/composition ideas!

9x12 will be for larger pieces such as character sheets, profiles, and storyboards.

Finally, 7x10 will be my magic number when it comes to final comic/graphic novel/manga artwork, which can be better scanned and formatted for digital submission.

May God help me with the next coming months. It's gonna be a doozy!

CAMP NaNoWriMo is fast approaching and I've been having tech problems...

It has been three years since I participated in any NaNoWriMo activities.

As I've said in past posts, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. At the end of this post, I will provide official links. The reason I decided to do so this year is I have a series that helped me find my voice as a writer as well as a community of acceptance. It has also helped me have a "writing career" of sorts. I've been interviewed for podcasts, invited to participate in writing workshops, a few events, and led me to graduate school, something I thought I wouldn't do.

My feline fantasy series has also helped me to create an online presence as well as navigate social media and I know there are still stories for me to tell. I don't want to give it up. Also, the life of a writer has sidelines and detours. Writers, we get distracted or obsessed with other projects, new ideas, and have asides. Also, life gets in the way as it does with everything. Sometimes, I struggle to juggle all these stories, new shiny ideas, and the determination to finish other projects.

Once I sat back and took a good look at myself from 2017 and 2018, I realized I would need to take a step back from the goals I had set for myself, especially when certain goals have been met as well as seeing that some have become stumbling blocks and may no longer serve their purpose. It's okay to walk away from certain goals one sets for oneself! I had to learn that hard lesson. I understood that the continuing of my fantasy short story series cannot be sacrificed in the interest of goals that have expired or outlived their purpose.

Sorry, I went into a diatribe, but I'm officially returning to the Tabber the Red world and will use 2019 as the Year of the Cat for my tales. My website named after my warrior tabby is turning 13 and I want to give it a fresh new look for its birthday this year. The blogs keep getting updated, but ever since I upgraded my desktop, I now lack the software I've used to update the website. And just recently, had to lease a new laptop since the new Dell netbook to replace my Chromebook died, and then the Chromebook has been shutting off, so...

Also, my mom needed a new computer, so I helped put her Lenovo 3-in-1 desktop together and have been navigating my way around it as well as my own Alienware to keep their antiviruses, software patches, and notifications up-to-speed. It hasn't been easy. I'm a lab tutor and one of my coworkers and good friends is our department's tech person, I'm the unofficial one for when he isn't around. So, not only do I have to do topical fixes and changes to our technical equipment at my job, but I come home to maintain my and mom's computers and printer. That's another thing, my own 3-in-1 printer stopped talking to my Chromebook, so that's been fun!

But the good news is my desktop is an Alienware and my brand-new laptop is a Razer, so by the grace of God, I can go back to worrying about updating site, blogs, writing, and hopefully returning to relearning digital artwork on these new platforms. And there I went off on talking about technology when I should have been talking about my plans for April Camp NaNoWriMo!

Next post! Onward and upward!

Illustrations, New Concepts, and a New Art Account!

[NOTE: Here, there be links!]
As a return to my Tabber the Red writing, I had an idea for an illustration while writing the latest cat fantasy.
ShadoWalker & his Autumn angel (2018)
The concept was difficult and it took some planning but I think I got my point across. Oh! I can also introduce my new Instagram account: Hand drawn by Carmen Jr - While the Deviant Art is my official online portfolio, the Instagram is for friends and other artists to see progressions of my work - such as rough sketches, thumbnails, preliminaries, and drafts! As well as previous versions side-by-side with updated versions.

World-building shouldn't be this hard... But it is

Time to continue my series' bible now that I unearthed my big blue journal! This huge notebook has a special place in my heart. Bought it from Borders Books back in 2002 when there was still a superstore in the next city.

Retyping my feline vocabulary from the language I made for my cat characters and putting them into alphabetical order because I'm crazy like that.

So those cat languages I wrote down eons ago were three language systems: runes, pictographs, & hieroglyphs... Am researching to re-tool all over again. *Weeping*

Using up my mom's Epson printer ink. Gotta switch off. And why use HER'S? Oh, that's right, because for some STUPID REASON, my HP Officejet 4630 printer no longer has the capabilities of working via wi-fi! Not cool, Hewlett-Packard. Not cool.

Eureka!
These languages were based on Egyptian hieroglyphs, Phoenician alphabet, and Celtic runes... Thank God I remember the actual systems.

Ok... Tired. Last day of work this week. I've jotted my language notes and will begin to craft (or draft?) these words into their written systems, beginning with the vocabulary I have typed so far from series' bible. And I still need to outline some scenes from same feline story! Kill me now.

The latest happening...

Haven't posted to my blog. So many things going on...
A co-worker and good friend suddenly went into a coma, was in that state for over two weeks, and then suddenly passed away.

I've been applying to many writing grants and other opportunities because I was planning to quit one of my jobs. Now I realize I must keep the job all the way into next year but continue to apply for those writing grants.

My novel is continuing. Just need to add more meat in-between chapters.

Ever since I participated in Inktober this October, I have reinvigorated my sense of artwork and changed my paradigm view on myself as an artist. Now I'm receiving more info to sell my pieces.

I also am revising a number of short fiction that can expand my submission opportunities. Not only to help market my upcoming novel but help with those grant opportunities.

I am also trying to vidcast and podcast some more to get my Introverted self ready for more marketing within the writing and art communities.

So yeah. A lot has been going on and will continue, G-d willing, into 2017.

This has been a difficult year for many of us and I hope and pray for a more prospering and fulfilling future.

Continue to check my website as well as my WordPress blog because both have some more updates!

If I don't talk to you all again, Season's Greetings and In Pretty Print will see you in the upcoming new year! Take care, my dear readers.

Tabber the Red 10th Anniversary TBA

Every July I celebrate the inception of my website.
It has had a number of web hosts, its templates have been changed, and its overall appearance and aesthetic has been considered, reconsidered, and then implemented.

If something does not work, I change it.

Tabber the Red first went live in July 2006. Since then, my official website has yielded many benefits. It helped me find employment, helped editors to see my work. Readers to find me in one place instead of using a search engine.

For every web anniversary, I offer free downloads for my visitors and readers. Here is a sampling for July 2016 to come:

This Blog Turns 4 YEARS OLD

Had just realized once this November started, "In Pretty Print" has turned 4 Years Old! My little Bloggie is growin' up! Now that I wiped the tear from my eye, I can get started.

This has caused me to re-evaluate my blog and its purpose. Something I think all bloggers run into and have to ponder. I don't have any special downloads or swag to offer. I used that for the official site, and initially, the blogs were to be 'companion pieces' to Tabber the Red website. I didn't expect the blogs to take on lives of their own. They are now complete entities in themselves, yet part of my mini-network with the site (this also includes the DeviantART profile).

Blogging didn't come easy to me when building my website. It was a learning process. I made mistakes and lost blogs because of it. This blog is actually my FOURTH attempt. Still, I don't feel like an expert. I still read and follow and 'fan' other blogs (as well as grinding my teeth in envy over their beautiful interfaces and templates) but I also try to learn from other bloggers to continue to help mine grow and evolve.
One day, I want others to visit In Pretty Print in droves. I want it to change lives. I want it to be one of many sources of inspiration. Just as other blogs do for me and more.

In celebration of "In Pretty Print - A Writing and Artist Life...Ongoing", I will try to break my average 2-3 posts per month.

If you're a fan of my blog, I will be highlighting pivotal posts that were first debuted on the now closed literary blog carnival, Third Sunday. The posts I submitted to the blog carnival consisted of writing advice and tips, things that inspired me, ideas on what to do if deciding on an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degree, and much, much more.

There are a lot of events happening this November: NaNoWriMo, the Miami Book Fair International, etc.
Let me celebrate the blog's 4th birthday by offering the information and ideas that have sustained me as a writer and artist over the years.

Thank you.

First short story published is now a podcast!

Hello Everyone!

Sorry, have been busy: Tweeting, revising this blog, and The Copper Sphinx.
This as well as working on new sketches, uploading a comic strip to Media Junk Food's Facebook page (I will provide the links for all this below), as well as trying to go through older files to complete other stories/projects.

*WHEW*

Anthropomorphic Dreams Publishing turned the "Su Ling" short story into one of their recent podcasts.
"Su Ling" is dear to me. It is the FIRST story I published back in 2000 in the now out-of-print fanzine "PawPrints".

(Anthropomorphic Dreams made another hardcopy story of mine into a podcast. Check out my official website "Tabber the Red" for complete details about my publications. All links are as current as I can make them.)

Furry Writers' Guild, my writers' group, announced the republishing of this story on our homepage!

(More details about what inspired this short story, as well as my biography, in a nutshell, is provided within the podcast.)
